If I had to list the best punk records from the 90s, Smogtown’s “führers of the new wave” (it just has been remastered and reissued) would certainly be among the best. They were, in my opinion, one of the best bands of their generation, unknown to many and underrated by others. They managed to combine the best of bands like Black Flag, circle jerk, weirdos or Adolescents with lyrics about the dystopia of living in the suburbs of big American cities like Los Angeles on 30 minutes killer records. They decided to dissolve the band and rename them as Gross Polluter, with the same style and attitude, after the departure of their original guitarist a few years ago. Having released 3 eps which are for sure some the highlights of punk hc of the last years, mixing the aggressive sound of Smogtown with keyboards provideding a unique touch of post-punk to their sound. Now they have decided to release their first full length and it does not disappoint at all. Sounding somewhat more aggressive than their eps, hiding the keyboard in some songs, the album starts with Suburban weekend lockdown, a great song in the Black Flag´s style, especially for that guitar playing remembering Greg Ginn´s, and they no longer slow down with fast songs like Time enough or stag distro, some of them sounding to me like Circle jerks´s wild in the streets(just here for the violence) but with their own style. The best of the album comes in the middle : the two songs in a row that are Mastvr, which already came out in an ep with the name of running wild, however this version is much better with highlighting the keyboard throughout the song, and Sleepless city (the best song for me), which also came out in another ep, but with another singer and a different mix where the keyboard had a lot of weight. In this take, the magic of the keyboard is lost, but much is gained with aggressiveness when playing it. The album continues running without lowering the rpm until the final song Breakwater Blues, in a different version than the ep, that puts the finishing touch on one of the albums of the year. Si tuviera que hacer una lista de los mejores discos de punk de los 90, “führers of the new wave” de Smogtown (ahora recientemente remasterizado) estaría sin duda entre los mejores. Fueron, en mi opinión, una de las mejores bandas de su generación, desconocidos para muchos e infravalorados por otros. Conseguían aunar en discos de apenas media hora lo mejor de bandas como Black Flag, Circle jerks, weirdos o Adolescents con letras sobre la distopia que significaba vivir en los suburbios de grandes ciudades americanas como Los Angeles. Tras la partida hace unos años de su guitarrista original, decidieron disolver la banda y empezar un nuevo periplo como Gross Polluter, con el mismo estilo y actitud. Han publicado 3 eps que me parecen de lo más destacado de los últimos años, mezclando el sonido agresivo de Smogtown con un teclado que le daba un cierto toque post-punk a algunos temas. Ahora se han decidido a lanzar su primera larga duración y no decepciona en absoluto. De sonido algo más agresivo que sus eps, dejando algo de lado el teclado, comienza el disco con Suburban weekend lockdown, un temazo al estilo de Black Flag, sobretodo por esa guitarra con reminiscencias de Greg Ginn, y ya no bajan el ritmo con temas rápidos como Time enough o stag distro, alguno con reminiscencias a los Circle jerks del “violence in the streets” con just here for the violence. Lo mejor del disco en mi opinión: los dos temazos seguidos que son Mastvr , que ya salió en un ep con el nombre de running wild, sin embargo esta versión es mucho mejor con destacando el teclado durante todo el tema, y Sleepless city (para mí el mejor tema), que también salió en otro ep, pero con otro cantante y una mezcla distinta donde el teclado tenía mucho peso. En esta toma se pierde la magia del teclado, pero se gana mucho con la agresividad a la hora de interpretarla. Sigue transcurriendo el disco sin bajar las rpm hasta el temazo final Breakwater Blues, en otra versión distinta a la del ep que pone el broche final a uno de los discos del año. 🏴☠️
